Making of

After six years in production, I realized that the 2½ hour series was too long to show in most settings, such as at meetings and in classrooms. Working with a core member of my production team, Katie Peterson, we put together MOTHERHOOD by CHOICE a film based on the most powerful and provocative moments from each of the three films.  The result was a ½ hour DVD, which could easily be shown at conferences, in academic settings and as a highlight of any gathering. While each of the individual films are still shown, many groups find the shorter 30 minute constellation of clips a perfect length as an invitation to discussion.

Suggested Uses & Resources

• Inform people about the need for safe legal abortion through documenting the dangers of the back-alley days.
• Inspire action using these vivid portrayals of passionate individuals who helped provide access to safe abortion care, and who fought to make abortion legal.
• Spark concern by documenting the steady erosion of reproductive rights today.

Synopsis

MOTHERHOOD by CHOICE, Not Chance distills key moments from each of the three films in the OSCAR-nominated, EMMY-winning 2½ hour series CHOICE: From the Back-Alleys to the Supreme Court & Beyond.

Through first person stories, this documentary brings alive the history of the struggle for women's reproductive rights in the United States. Intimate interviews reveal the passion of those who moved abortion from the danger of the back alleys to a safe, legal choice. This film also includes information about current threats to those rights.
